“I’m sorry. I just reacted to your hand. It was dark and I didn’t see who had grabbed me. Why didn’t you say something?”

“I wanted to see what you would do.”

“Then why are you mad? I took you down to the ground and had control. You were crying out in pain from a little elbow twist. I did exactly what I’ve been trained to do.”

“Who trained you to let go? After your attacker fell to the ground, you had the elbow locked and the wrist pushed back to the forearm. God, excruciating pain, beautiful really … Then you just dropped the hand without even asking me why I grabbed you.” Rick slid his hand inside his jacket and in the next moment had the barrel of a handgun pointed at Kelly’s chest. “Were you waiting for me to pull out a gun?”

Kelly swallowed hard and looked directly into Rick’s eyes. She could feel the cold metal press through her thin shirt. She opened her mouth to explain and in the same moment shoved Rick’s hand to the left as she lunged to the right. Her finger slipped between the trigger and his finger so quickly that he didn’t have time to pull away. Suddenly she was holding the gun in her hand and pointing the barrel at Rick.

“Damn, woman. Not bad.”

“I hate guns.” She checked the safety before palming the weapon back to Rick. “I shot my dad with a BB gun when I was ten. He still has a scar on his shin. After that experience, I forgot how to shoot.”

“You’ll remember.”

Kelly shook her head. “I don’t want to.”

Rick shrugged and returned the gun to his holster. “If you work for me, knowing how to handle a gun will be essential.”

“What does a gun have to do with the mail delivery service?”

“Pretty soon there will be more to your job than delivering packŹages. So, what do you know about Private Wallace?”

“Private Wallace? Doesn’t sound familiar …” The name didn’t
